Which country has the highest percentage of cat owners?

Research company Dalia decided to find out, and a recent survey concluded that Russians are the world’s biggest cat lovers, with 59 percent of the population owning at least one cat.

Not far behind Russia in cat ownership is the Ukraine, with 49 percent owning feline companions.  And although Russia is home to the most cat owners, Malaysians keep more cats, with 17 percent owning three or more cats.

The results were based on a survey of 43,034 people across 52 countries and was conducted this month.  South Korea scores lowest on the list where only nine percent of people own a cat.

The authors of the Berlin-based Dalia Research study were not surprised to find Russia topped the list.  “In Russia, cats have long been on a high pedestal, since the reign of Empress Elizabeth in the 1700s, where felines prized for their mouse-catching abilities were brought to the palace to live pampered lives,” Dalia said in a recent statement.

“Today, in the part of the palace now called St. Petersburg’s Hermitage Museum, there are still around 70 cats – much to the delight of the museum administration, staff and visitors.  Last weekend Russia hosted the International Cat Exhibition in St. Petersburg. And on March 1st, Russians celebrated National Cat Day.”
