For the past five years my boyfriend Jason and I shared a small apartment with our cats in a cozy neighborhood in Queens, New York. We’d often discussed leaving the city for my native Vermont, but it was a plan that never seemed to actualize on its own – it was, however, the end result of an apartment fire that forced us from our home in June of this year. Our cats were lost to smoke inhalation, and the majority of our belongings were obliterated or smoke-damaged. The decision had been made for us – it was time to go.
