Devin was still a baby kitten when he was seriously hurt by a very young child. Thanks to his rescuers, he has a good and happy life and can feel safe from now on.  The caring rescue group that helped Devin has been rewarded with more than just the satisfaction of saving and helping a kitten in need – Angels Among Us Pet Rescue of  Alpharetta, Georgia has been awarded a $50,000 by The Petco Foundation, through its Holiday Wishes grant campaign, to help the organization maintain its life-saving efforts for animals throughout the metro Atlanta area

The screams were so loud they could be heard over the construction machinery next door. Jarred by what he heard, a worker shut off his equipment and turned to see where they were coming from.

The worker watched in horror as an unsupervised child abused a five-week-old kitten. The kitten, now named Devin (meaning “perfect”) had no defense other than the sound of his own painful cries as he was tossed around the yard. With each fall, portions of Devin’s body crumbled. Bones were crushed, but what was happening internally was far worse.

Panicked, the worker dropped his equipment immediately and ran to the scene. Bruises had already started to form on Devin’s stomach and he had no mobility in his rear legs. The worker alerted the child’s parent and begged them to let him take the kitten home. He didn’t know if he could save Devin, but he had to try.

For the next 24 hours, the worker and his family tried to nurse Devin back to health, but he clearly needed more. Intake vetting showed a severe spinal cord injury from his abuse and permanent paralysis of his rear two legs. Additionally, he had lost all bladder and bowel function and would need a human to help him urinate multiple times daily.

This meant lifetime, 24-hour care. Anticipated medical fees exceeded $5,000. The worker did not wish to keep the kitten and, not wanting to euthanize him, called Angels Among Us Pet Rescue (AAUPR) of Alpharetta, Ga., to ask for help.

Despite his catastrophic injuries, Devin showed spunk and a will to live.

“When he batted at me with his two good paws through that crate, I just knew we had to help him,” said AAUPR volunteer, Kim Kay.

Saving his life was no small feat, but today, Devin lives!

AAUPR took his story to Facebook, and a global legion of Angels rallied. Vetting fees were raised from donations (including children), care packages were received and, at the request of Devin’s fan base, a separate Facebook page was established just for him.

Fortunately, today Devin feels no pain from his paralysis. A customized set of wheels was built to aide his mobility thanks to AAUPR. And, best of all, the vet who first treated him has decided to adopt Devin, understanding his lifetime of treatment needs.

“Faced with horrific abuse, Devin holds no grudge,” said Kay. “He is a standard bearer of unconditional love, a champion for never giving up, and an inspirational example that regardless of disability, life can still be enjoyed to its fullest. He is a true angel among us.”

  1. Just proves the parent’s should be neutered and all their children removed from them as obviously they don’t have any real care for other living beings a child is redeemable and can be taught especially at a young age- the parents should know and understand about being caring towards those weaker than themselves – which, going by this they obviously don’t
