He was dumped at the front door of Douglas County Animal Care & Services (NV). Shoved into a carrier so small he couldn’t turn around. Abandoned, with no explanation. He was so matted and dirty that staff at the shelter didn’t even know he was a cat until he was extracted. A tangled mess and in pain due to the weight of his coat, he couldn’t move at all.

“He couldn’t even take a step,” shelter supervisor Liz Begovich told The Dodo. “We couldn’t turn him around because of the way he was shoved in the carrier. So we took the top off and thought, ‘Oh my gosh, it’s a cat!’ I’ve never seen a cat in that sort of condition.” Staff used ‘imprisoned’ to describe his critical situation.

Cat Dumped Unceremoniously in the Middle of the Night

There were photos taken of a man dropping off the carrier by the security cameras at the facility, but Begovich did not want to speculate on whether this was the owner.

“Normally, when someone leaves an animal after hours, there’s usually more to the story. It’s typically not a Good Samaritan who found an animal on the side of the road,” she said. “We would really like to know the backstory. There could be other animals in this house, wherever this cat came from, who are in the same condition.”

Hair Removal Revealed a Bigger Problem

The staff took 4.5 pounds of hair from the cat the staff affectionately named “Bob Marley.” The removal also revealed Bob was extremely overweight. At 22.6 pounds, it was small wonder the feline was suffering. It became clear that once the hair was off, Bob felt like a new cat. Staff reported it was as if he knew he had been freed looking around the room for places to move and jump.

But Bob’s story has a very happy ending.  He has been adopted into a loving, forever home where he will get plenty of attention, have a managed diet, and it is a good bet he will get the occasional haircut, as needed.
