Clementine the cat is a loving, caring companion who has helped her family through a very difficult period.

Nearly two years ago Rosemary Clapton, of Ripon, North Yorkshire, UK, received the call that was to shatter her life. Her husband Jonathan had been seriously injured in a work accident and was in a critical condition. Despite sustaining severe head injuries and several broken vertebra in his back, Jonathan pulled through but faced an agonizing road to recovery.

Rosemary suffers from ME (Myalgic Encephalopathy, or chronic fatigue syndrome), along with clinical depression, and during her husband’s five-month hospital stay she turned to their pet cat Clementine for support, comfort and companionship.

Jonathan says, “I don’t know how she did it, but she made Rose strong.”

Now that Jonathan is back at home, three-year-old Clementine has provided a constant source of joy for the couple as they begin to piece their lives back together.

Rosemary says the couple may not be able to have children as a result of Jonathan’s accident, and that Clementine is their family, and their reason for getting up in the morning. She gives them something to live for.

Clementine is a finalist for Cats Protection UK’s 2014 National Cat Awards in the Hero Cat category. The awards categories will be judged at The Savoy Hotel in London on August 7.

The National Cat Awards are designed to celebrate the extraordinary tales of survival, companionship and bravery in the feline world.
