Ailurophiles take note. Caturday October 29 is National Cat Day. So hug your cat, take a nap, or make a donation to a shelter that helps cats every day of the year.

If you have a kitty, or three or four, take time out to spoil them. If you don’t, then consider adopting a shelter cat. Or buy a fabulous cat calendar from the ASPCA.

Cat Day was founded in 2005 by animal welfare advocate Colleen Paige to remind everyone of the importance of the adopting shelter cats. (She’s also responsible for National Dog Day, but we won’t hold that against her.) Every year, some 4 million cats end up in shelter and half of them are euthanized.

The ASPCA reminds cat lovers to adopt, not shop, and to spay and neuter your pets. Here’s to Felis Silvestrus Catus. Long may she live and reign.
