Dropped your cell phone into water? Before you go to dry it out in a bag of rice, there’s now a better option which cat owners likely have readily available. The new solution? Kitty litter.

Rice has been a popular material to use when drying out a phone because it helps to absorb the moisture, often returning the phone to a functioning condition again. But kitty litter, particularly the kind which contains crystals, is now preferred because of the silica which is in the litter. Silica is highly absorbent and can pull the moisture out of the phone.

So how did we come to this conclusion? A company which recycles phones submerged 9 smartphones in water, then put them into everyday household materials, like rice, kitty litter, and oatmeal. The crystal kitty litter did the best job of drying the phones out – and, coincidentally, rice had the worst results.

So, next time you stock up on kitty litter, you might want to invest in a bag of the crystal litter, even if you don’t have a cat.
