A grey tabby cat named Momma lived her entire life at the shelter after coming there at 3 months old. Now 12, she has finally found a good home.

Momma got her share of attention from staffers at the Worcester County Humane Society, in Berlin, Maryland, but no one in the 12 years she was there ever picked her to take home to become their loved and pampered pet. That all changed last month, though, when shelter staffer Patrick Campbell Priest decided to add to his family’s furry contingent after losing two pets to old age in the past year. Patrick, who has worked at the shelter for the past couple of months, asked which cat had waited the longest for a home and decided to adopt Momma, the shelter’s longest-staying resident.

Lenore Bennett, the humane society’s interim executive director, is quoted in a Delmarva Now story on the adoption, saying: “We were all loving it,” she said. “We all love her, but we want her to have a home.”

Priest hopes to inspire other to adopt older pets.

“I just think they deserve a home at some point in their life,” he says in the Delmarva Now story. “As well as we try to treat them here, it’s still not the same as having the individual attention and the love they get in a home.”

“She walked in [to her new home] like she owned the place and she’d been there her whole life,” he said.

“Every time I see her, she looks at me and she starts purring,” he said. “She’s grateful to be in a home, but I’m grateful to have her because she brings me a lot of joy.”

Momma has adapted well and gets along with her new family’s other two cats.

The Worcester County Humane Society shared a photo of Momma and her new family to Facebook on August 29, writing: “Congratulations Momma!! We are so happy for you and wish you all the best! Thank you Patrick for thinking adoption and giving one of our senior kitties a loving home.”

Patrick’s daughter Emma wrote in the Facebook comments: “‘m proud to have a dad that gives older animals a chance at a new life and everything he is doing at the animal shelter!Patrick Campbell Priest love you and momma cat!
