North America’s first cat cafe, Le Café des Chats Montréal opened recently, with a group of cats adopted from Montreal’s SPCA.

The Café des Chats is home to eight cats who can interact with visitors sipping coffee in the cafe’s public space or retreat to their private area when they are feeling less sociable.

The cats are not allowed in the food preparation area, and their litter trays are away from the public area but accessible to the cats.

Hundreds of people visited the cafe when it opened on Saturday.

“It’s a great opportunity for people who don’t have a cat at home,” said Nicholas Girouard, who told a reporter from Global News that he has been waiting months for the place to open.

“I have three at home but I just can’t get enough of cats, so I love this place.”
