Dr Bob Cavey with Domino

Domino the cat went from being a he to a she recently through a surgical procedure performed by veterinarian Bob Cavey of Narre Warren’s Ultimate Veterinary Clinic in Melbourne, Australia.

The surgery was performed for medical reasons; the eight-year-old cat suffered from a blocked bladder caused by salt crystals formed in the blood.

“Males are particularly prone to this problem,” Dr Cavey said. “We treated Domino eight times, but the last time it couldn’t be unblocked. The only option was to change him to a she or he would die.” Domino is doing well after the successful surgery, which is becoming more common.

Guardians, Peter and Helen Rivers, have spent $6700 on medical treatment for the Domino, a former stray who adopted them. The sex change cost them $1500.

Ms. Rivers notes that domino’s personality has changed since the gender reassignment. She is happier and more playful.
