A young man began a personal crusade to save the stray cats near his home when he was just in school in his hometown of Riyadh, capital of Saudi Arabia. Today, Shahid Samek sets aside three-quarters of his monthly salary for their care and feeding, having created a make-shift shelter in which to house them.
His mission is simple. First, he wants to improve the state of animal welfare in the country. Secondly, he wants to show people in the West that Muslims, “do not seek destruction,” I want to make people in the west know that we as people, as Muslims, do not kill animals and do not seek destruction and we are not terrorists. On the contrary, if we were terrorists, it would be impossible that we help the animals,” 23-year old Palestinian said in an interview with Reuters Gavino Garay.
In addition to the shelter, Samek has a small clinic where he cares for sick and injured animals. He is also working to raise awareness about adoption and fight against animal abuse throughout the country, being disheartened by the number of strays he finds.
