As they are becoming world travelers of the highest calibre, they wanted to share some of their tips for others who may be considering taking a big, or even small, trip.

a conversation lifestyle site founder and furmom to the adorable ginger boys, Stevie Benanty, shares some of the lessons they have learned as they venture forth:

TIP NUMBER 1 – Make sure to have all proper equipment organized ahead of time.  That includes:

  • Comfortable carriers with enough room in them so your pets can lie down
  • Portable rubber (best to keep things from slipping) water bowl
  • Small bag of food
  • Disposable litter boxes (they come with litter in them and pop up, all ready to be used, to be thrown away when you’re done – check it out on Amazon)
  • Leash and collar just in case you have to take them out of the car for any reason

TIP NUMBER 2 – Be sure you have extras of everything, especially food and litter, in case you got stuck somewhere unexpectedly

TIP NUMBER 3 -If traveling in a new country, make sure to have all paper work/visas/EU Pet Passports handy and signed by a vet

  • Give yourself plenty of time to plan and organize for vet visits within the prescribed time limits required to validate travel
  • Make sure to visit the vet ahead of time for their sign off if traveling across countries in Europe
  • Verify, particularly if you are traveling to another country, there is no quarantine required or what those requirements are and if they can be met ahead of time.  The United Kingdom, for example, has very specific restrictions. In fact, if your travel arrangements have you simply laying over in a country or state (Hawaii has strict regulations) with a quarantine, your pet may be subject to staying in quarantine for the required period of time, regardless of your travel plans.  CHECK YOUR ITINERARY and CHECK AHEAD!

TIP NUMBER 4 – Make sure you plan ahead to assure you and your pets will have a good place to stay during your travel

  • If you book a ‘pet friendly’ hotel online be sure to call them to double check that they allow CATS – pet friendly does not always equal cat friendly!
  • Bring a foldable (and large) enclosed pen to keep cat/cats in if you check into a hotel and leave your room. They can stay safe in the pen if you aren’t comfortable with them roaming around OR if housekeeping comes in. It will ensure they don’t get out!

TIP NUMBER 5 – Help your pets into the a travel mindset

  • Get them comfortable in their carriers and in the car head of time: leave the carriers out in the living room for a week or two ahead of the trip so they aren’t afraid of it and don’t associate the carrier just with the vet!
  • If you have to, go on small car trips around the neighborhood so they can feel safe in the car
