Thanks to a turn of events and the efforts of those who devote themselves to helping homeless animals, a North Carolina woman was reunited with her long lost cat earlier this month.
There wasn’t a dry eye in the room when Rebecca Patt was finally reunited with her cat after three years, two months and 10 days of intense searching, the Herald-Weekly reported.
Rebecca said she felt a special connection with Biscuit and was disconsolate when he disappeared in 2012. After three year had passed, she was finally ready to accept that he was gone and she’d have to move on with her life.
Then she received a call from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Animal Control division on March 3, telling her that officers had her cat.
When she arrived to pick him up, Biscuit recognized her right away and put his face up against the door of the cage.
“When I got the call [saying Biscuit had been found], I was outside,” Rebecca said. “Stunned, I sat down on the sidewalk, hyperventilating. Few things have knocked me off my feet but that phone call did.”
Rebecca was able to learn something about how Biscuit spent his time while he was missing from home. He had been taken in by an elderly lady living near downtown Mooresville who had adopted several other strays. The woman recently died and a friend called Lake Norman Lucky Cat to come for the cats.
“When we got there, we found numerous cats and ended up trapping them and taking them to the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department Animal Care and Control,” said Christine Delaughter, who works with Lake Norman Lucky Cat. “It’s standard procedure for stray cats to be inspected, spayed or neutered, and checked for a microchip before putting them in foster care.”
The Charlotte Humane Society was conducting a spay/neuter clinic at Animal Control when Biscuit came in as a possibly feral stray.
A microchip scan found Biscuit’s chip and revealed Rebecca’s contact information.
“Patt kept up her contact information,” Lucky Cats’ Christine Delaughter said. “That’s how we were able to find her.”
The Humane Society of Charlotte shared the great news of the reunion at Facebook on March 3, writing: “HSC REUNION *** HAPPY ENDING!
“Yesterday a “feral” cat came to our Spay/Neuter Clinic at CMPD Animal Care & Control on a transport from Lake Norman Lucky Cat.
“Once he was being prepped for surgery, our staff noticed that he had a notch in his ear and was already neutered. He was also microchipped, which led us to the owner, Rebecca Patt.
“Biscuit disappeared in January of 2012 in the Mooresville area after being her best buddy for 6 years. She looked for him for months, but she had to move to Asheville that summer.
“She was beyond ecstatic when she was notified that he had been found happy & moderately healthy over 3 years later! Here are some pictures from the heartwarming reunion this morning.”
