A family of cats was rescued and found to be severely frostbitten which resulted in one of the kittens having to be put down due to extreme injuries. The adult cat and one of the kittens had their back legs, tails, and ear tips critically effected, while another kitten required a portion of its tail to be amputated. As weather conditions grow colder, it is important to remember to take precautions if animals are permitted outside. While cats who live outdoors regularly will grow heavier coats, that still is not always enough to protect them from extreme conditions and, certainly, cats who are indoors only are at even greater risk should they get outside during this time.
The article from CBC News that addresses the situation of the cat and kittens who were rescued wrote that “Josh Hourie, community relations coordinator for the Saskatchewan SPCA said the cats’ situation is unfortunate but one that people see and hear about all too often. In Prince Albert, a group of puppies were found discarded in a dumpster in extremely cold temperatures.”
For those with cats, this is a cautionary tale and reminder to take care of your pets and if finding an animal that has been left to its own devices in the cold and appears to be suffering, it is important to get them immediately into a warm environment and seek the assistance of the local SCPA, vet, or rescue group.
