A cat who escaped from the car in Ohio while traveling to Texas was reunited with his family after nearly a week thanks to an animal organization and local residents.

Jolly Roger, a handsome and distinctive-looking 5 yearold tuxie cat, escaped from the car during a move with his family from New York back home to Sherman, Texas. He went missing at an Ohio rest stop when Joshua Aguirre and his wife pulled in to nap. The cat managed to roll down the window and got out of the car as the couple slept.

“We immediately started looking around trying to find him and realized he wasn’t in there,” Aguirre told KXII Channel 12 news.

The couple had to continue on their journey, but they informed the Fayette Humane Society in Washington Court House, the county seat of Fayette County, Ohio ,before heading out. Pics posted at Facebook were shared hundreds of times.

The help they got from the Fayette Humane Society and the many concerned animal lovers online made a big impression jolly Roger’s petdad.

“Kinda just restored my faith in humanity and like not everyone’s just mean to animals,” Aguirre said.

Jolly Roger was quickly identified when he was found in a barn less than a mile from the rest stop.  Once the call came in saying Jolly Roger had been found, Aguirre, his brother, and a friend made the 16 hour (one way), approximately 1,000 mile drive to Ohio to pick up the cat.

Aguirre told Channel 12 he is extremely thankful to the Fayette Humane Society ,

The Fayette Humane Society wrote about Jolly Roger at Facebook on June 10, saying: The missing cat, Jolly Roger from Texas has been found. Jolly Roger is now in the humane society van and heading back to the adoption and business center from Jeffersonville as of 10:30 p.m. An area resident near the interstate 71 rest area found the cat and called the Sheriff’s Office. Jolly Roger escaped out of his owners’ car last Thursday while they were sleeping at the rest area on interstate 71 headed west in Jeffersonville. They contacted the humane society [and] we immediately posted Jolly Rogers photo on our Facebook. The owners are from Texas and just stopped to sleep. The car was running to keep everyone cool and the cat accidentally unrolled the window and jumped out while they were asleep.

The Humane Society made an update at Facebook on June 11, saying: “From Texas to Ohio and now heading back to Texas. Jolly Roger is on his way home after he escaped his owners vehicle last Thursday while they were asleep at the interstate 71 rest area in Jeffersonville. After he was found last night by an area resident near the rest area, the owners were immediately notified at 10:30 p.m. According to Jolly Rogers’ owner, Joshua (pictured in center), [he] and his brother Jacob along with their good friend, Jacob got on the road and left Texas for Ohio around midnight to bring Jolly Rogers back home. A farewell to Jolly Rogers and a huge thank you to his owner who serves in our Nation’s military. Thank you, Joshua!”
