Three teens rescued a kitten left to die on a floating log and brought it to a shelter.

Sarah, Lilly and David, known only by their first names to shelter staff, were skimming stones across the Hutt River, in Lower Hutt, in the Wellington Region of New Zealand, Wednesday afternoon when they saw the kitten floating downstream toward Wellington Harbor.

David waded in and picked the kitten up from the log, then passed it to the girls.

The teens swaddled kitty a hoodie and walked about 2.5 miles to deliver it to the Kitten Inn animal shelter.

Kitten Inn’s Susan McNair praised the youngsters, who she says appeared to be in their mid-teens, saying in a Stuff.co.nz story: “It does your heart good to know that there are young people out there that will continue on after us.

“I congratulate the parents, they brought up some really good kids.”

Speaking to the circumstances that landed kitty on the log, she said: “There’s no way on this Earth could it have climbed up there and set itself off.

“It’s old enough to roll onto its back, but it can’t walk. They only open their eyes after about a week

“It certainly didn’t jump itself onto the log then push itself out – no way.

“How it came to be on a log floating down the river we will never know. What we do know is that it is now safe, warm and its little tummy is full and for him at least life is looking good.”

McNair is calling the kitten Woody and says she hopes his mum and littermates are okay.

Woody will be available for adoption in a couple of months.

Kitten Inn told the story at Facebook, writing:

It does your heart good to know that there are young people out there that will continue on after us…

Yesterday three young teenagers turned up at my place with this little tot wrapped up in one of their hoodies.

They had been down at the River and saw this poor little soul floating past on top of a log. Not only did they jump into the river to rescue the little kitten but they also then walked over 4km to bring it to me.

When they arrived at my door they said “We knew this was where you take all the kittens no one else wants”

How it came to be on a log floating down the river we will never know, what we do know is that it is now safe, warm and its little tummy is full and for him at least life is lookin good.

I would like to thank Sarah, Lilly and David again, I hope your parents know they did a fantastic job.
