On Thursday morning, a young kitten somehow got its paw stuck in a sewer grate in Florida. The Broward Sheriff’s Office responded after being called by a homeowner who spotted the kitten.

The Fire Department came to the scene to try to help free the kitten, who had been licking its trapped paw. The kitten was friendly toward the firefighters who worked to free it, though using lubricants to free the kitten’s paw proved unsuccessful. After a half hour of work, the firefighters ended up transporting both the kitten and the grate to the VCA Imperial Point Animal Hospital in Ft. Lauderdale.

Vets were able to carefully saw a hole into the grate, freeing the kitten’s paw. Amazingly, the kitten suffered no broken bones or significant injuries, though he is recovering at the vet. No one knows if the kitten has an owner or if it’s a stray, but he will stay at the vet while vets attempt to find an owner. If no owner is found, a firefighter who worked on the rescue is interested in adopting it.
