Running low on supplies, staff at the Nevada Humane Society sent out an appeal for kitten food even though they thought its timing, just before the 4th of July holiday weekend, might net a weak response.
Instead, they were surprised to receive over 5,000 pounds of food, along with cash donations, and the donations continue to come in.
Kimberly Wade, Senior Manager of Communications and Events, said: “We are so appreciative and beyond grateful for our animal lovers in Nevada. We were hitting a point where we were running low on kitten food and so we reached out. We supply the food to our Foster Program and the kittens here in the shelter until they all find a home to call their own. We weren’t quite sure what to expect given it was a holiday weekend but we couldn’t wait. We were—and are—blown away at the volume of people that donated, shared our plea on social media, and gave us cash to contribute to the fund. We are so proud to be part of such a community and owe our successes to them.”
NHS says thousands of kittens will enter the shelter this summer, many of whom will require hands-on foster care from volunteers.
In local media reports on the story, NHS provided contact information for volunteers who may be able to provide socialization and care for kittens.

Big thanks for our community who donated over 5,000lbs of kitten food during our time of need! And it’s still coming in!
