The Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association in Charleston, WV celebrated its 6 month anniversary of not killing a single animal for space considerations on Friday by having its animal incinerator dismantled and taken away to the scrap yard.
The shelter wrote at Facebook, saying: “We are committed to lifesaving and are employing creative alternatives to euthanasia. We are proud to say we’ve not euthanized a single animal for space in more than six months.”
“Removing the incinerator was a symbol of our commitment to saving lives.”
“As Charleston’s animal shelter closes in on its goal of being a no-kill shelter, workers have removed the crematorium at the facility. Director Chelsea Staley said the machine is no longer needed because so few animals are being put to sleep.”
Director Staley told the Charleston Daily Mail that the incinerator was in a state of disrepair and repairs would have cost $23,000, money the shelter does not have to spare.
“This is huge,” Director Staley told the paper “This is symbolic for us. We’ve been working toward this for two years. I can’t even describe to you how fulfilling this is.”
Rodney Loftis & Son Contracting hauled the metal away and wrote at their Facebook page: “Glad to be a part of this and help the community.”
