A mama kitty who ended up at the shelter with her kittens is caring for two tiny, abandoned newborn puppies.

June Bug came to the shelter with her kittens last week. Her kittens were just weaned and she was going to be spayed and put up for adoption when two newborn pups came to the shelter in need of mothering on Tuesday.

Staff at the Lester C. Howick Animal Shelter of Washington County, in Fayetteville, Arkansas, put the puppies with June Bug, and she is back on mama duty again. June Bug immediately adopted the babies as her own. The puppies nurse and snuggle with their surrogate mother, and the warmth and contact they find with her is giving them a better chance to grow into healthy dogs.

Administrative Assistant Madison Seyfried told KSFM Channel 5 that a Washington County animal control officer found the abandoned puppies and brought them in to the shelter.

“The kittens, we had weaned them recently from her, so she was probably pretty close to being spayed to be put up for adoption, but now it looks like she has a little bit more work ahead of her,” Seyfried said. “I mean, who says cats and dogs can’t get along? This is proof that that’s not true.”

The shelter is looking for people with bottle feeding experience to foster the puppies until they are old enough to made available for adoption.

Shelter staff are still uncertain of the newborn puppies’ breed but say they think they may be at least part dachshund because of their small size.
