When Macy’s San Fransisco Union Square unveiled their holiday window display on Friday November 18, the San Fransisco SPCA marked their 25th year in partnership with the store, placing adoptable pets in the holiday windows.
The windows were voted one of the “Top Ten Places to Press Your Nose Against the Glass” during the holiday season by USA Today, and the tradition is one of the most beloved symbols of the holiday spirit in San Francisco. SF SPCA Communications Manager Jennifer Lu says, “This holiday tradition is a wonderful expression of the holiday spirit in San Francisco.”
In 2010, the Windows Volunteers who work on the annual project helped nearly 300 animals find new homes and raised more than $70,000 for life-saving SF SPCA programming.. The volunteers take shifts from morning ’till night, during store hours; they greet the public, collect donations and direct people to the SF SPCA adoption center inside Macy’s
Additionally, the project brings joy to shoppers while making the case for adopting shelter pets, as it reminds the community of the good work of the SPCA.
This year’s windows’ theme is “Make a Wish,” a ‘wish factory’ where wishes and dreams are magically transformed into ornaments that decorate a tree of wishes.
The SPCA says, “All of the creature comforts are provided for our companions, including temperature control, hidden litter boxes and comfortable spots for those quick catnaps.
Every adoptable animal has been medically screened, vaccinated, microchipped and spayed or neutered. Each animal comes with a 30-day medical assistance plan at the SF SPCA infirmary, plus a gift bag filled with samples, treats and valuable certificates from sponsor partners of the SF SPCA and Macy’s.”
Each holiday window is equipped with a video camera that streams images, so animal lovers can watch the kittens and puppies from their computers throughout the holiday season. The streaming video from Holiday Windows is generously sponsored by KSFO Radio.
