A beautiful litter of kittens rescued from the bottom of a garbage can in Langley, BC ,where they huddled in their own urine, are all cleaned up and on their way to better lives as Tiny Kittens’ Sesame Street kittens.
Tiny Kittens is a foster home founded by Shelly Roche for cats and kittens rescued by her local no-kill shelter, Langley Animal Protection Society (LAPS). The Tiny Kittens Livestream kittencam feed has gained the Tiny Kittens a worldwide audience of devoted supporters and friends.
Tiny Kittens wrote about the kittens at Facebook on March 3, saying:
“Our new arrivals, the Sesame Street kittens, spent two days piled on top of each other in the bottom of this trash can. As you can imagine, they were cold, filthy, terrified, and soaked in their own urine. They were crawling with fleas, and have very bloated tummies which is usually indicative of intestinal parasites. They smelled terrible.
“We are so grateful to our very own Handyman, of Anders & Co., who was on duty collecting trash, heard their little mews and knew exactly what to do! He rushed them to LAPS, where we gave them baths and immediately treated them for fleas. They also got their first round of deworming, ears cleaned and treated for ear mites, temps taken, weights and first nail trims.”

Global News did a story on the kittens yesterday (video below), and spoke with Shelly Roche about the kittens and the greater problem of people discarding unwanted kittens. Shelly also talked about spay/neuter and an upcoming Pregnant cat and kitten roundup put on by LAPS on Saturday, March 7.
“[The garbage man who found the kittens] heard meowing and opened up one of the garbage cans and there they were in the bottom of this can. Just soaked in their own urine and very cold and just terrified,” said Shelly.
“Every year we get kittens that people throw away, or leave in a box in the park, or dump in the road,” she says. “It happens an astonishing amount, it’s hard every time.”
“It’s hard to imagine how someone could do that to another living creature.”
“It’s heartbreaking to think of the ones we don’t find.”
The key is to spay and neuter your cats to help control the population. But if you are faced with kittens you don’t want, take them to your local animal shelter and they will take them in.
“We do our best to accommodate them. We get overflow foster homes and we place as many as we can in foster care so they can get a home loving experience.”
“We get them spayed and neutered and ready to go and then we adopt them out.”
The Sesame Street kittens will be available for adoption after they are spayed and neutered and old enough to go to their loving homes.
