Taking on a senior cat requires a lot of love, patience, and dedication, but the rewards are many. Amanda Smith and her family know that, having adopted Camellia, a 16-year old blind and deaf cat from West LA Animal Services. A volunteer from that organization remembered Amanda and her husband and reached out to them about a pair of senior cats looking for a home. The volunteers hope was they might be able to get the word out about how wonderful having a senior cat can be in the hopes to find the 21-year olds a home.

In an interview with LoveMeow, Amanda shared her thoughts about Pepa and Meli when she received the news. “A bonded pair of super seniors. I think we all know what the odds are there. To make matters worse, Meli had been moved off the adoption floor due to fearful and aggressive behavior. Being guardian to a previously terrified girl I knew I had to get them both out of there.” The family made immediate arrangements to make the four-hour drive from San Diego to retrieve the pair and bring them home.

The good news is, Meli and Pepa have a new forever home, but theirs is not a unique plight. In their case, they wound up in the shelter because their owner had passed away and had not made any end of life arrangements for the felines. Sadly, for many pets, this can be the case, and more often than not, something that people never considered when it comes to creating a will or making plans following their death. While younger animals certainly may have a better chance of being rehomed, although that, too, could be called into question, a senior will have a far more difficult time. People don’t want to make the commitment to an older animal, but they are often overlooking some of the best possible pets, in spite of any challenges, perceived or real.
