Samantha’s Feline Food Bank distributes free cat food at California Cat Center in Van Nuys, CA every 3rd Sunday of the month from 10-2, no questions asked. Donors can drop off food at the Center, and every like to the Center’s Facebook page triggers a $2 donation to the fund.

Tomorrow, Sunday, April 15, will mark the second monthly cat food distribution day by Samantha’s Feline Food Bank. This new program offers cat food to pet owners in need, with no requirements.  Monica Ahumada of the California Cat Center told us, “We let people take what they need and our only requirement is that they bring a photo or drawing of their cat and let us keep it to put on our bullion board. We don’t ask for financials or even their name. Just their cats name and their zip.” They especially like to see drawings made by children.

Nancy Smith and Dr. Andrea S. Mullen DVM, who operate the California Cat Center started Samantha’s Feline Food Bank in the name of a cat named Samantha who lost her caregiver Harry in 2011. The goal of the food giveaway program established in Samantha’s name is to help cats and their families. They want to help prevent owners from abandoning or giving up their kitties because they can’t afford to feed them any more. We all know how much harder it is for adult cats to be adopted over kittens, and the program’s founders had that thought in mind when setting up the program.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       .       .

To keep the program going, they are accepting donations of both cat food and cash. They will also donate $2 to the food bank fund for each new “like” to the California Cat Center’s Facebook page.  A like to the page is a painless way to help cats and their families.

The food bank is held the third Sunday of each month, from 10 am to 2 pm  at the California Cat Center, at 7048 Sophia Ave., in Van Nuys, California. The center is conveniently located near both the 101 and the 495 in Van Nuys.

Samantha’s Feline Food Bank originally started giving food, litter, flea treatment and toys, but the organizers found at the first opening that the majority of the people who came didn’t have transportation, so they’ve have decided to concentrate on just giving food.  They will give out what remains of the litter, flea treatment and toys, but once that runs out, it will only be the cat food.
