Thousands of animal lovers have followed Russell on his healing journey after he was severely burned in a fire at his family’s home earlier this year.
Russell, the burn survivor kitty recuperating at Animal Emergency Hospital and Urgent Care in Raleigh, North Carolina, has made steady progress over several months, and is getting ever closer to being fully healed. Recent weeks have seen milestone events in the sweet survivor’s recovery, as his doctors have been able to address the areas around his eyes and perform surgery to fix his eyelids.
August surgeries on his eyes have been followed by procedures this month that have brought him closer still to being fully healed. As the burns on his body have healed, his fur has grown in and looks ever better.
Recent updates at the Animal Emergency Hospital and Urgent Care Facebook page tell about Russell’s medical progress, his good spirits and his activities. He has even helped to comfort a little dog. As always, Russell has been endlessly patient and cooperative in his visits with medical staff at the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine & Veterinary Health Complex, as with his caregivers at Animal Emergency Hospital.
September 2 Facebook update: “Russell is at his check up appointment with the specialists at NC State College of Veterinary Medicine & Veterinary Health Complex who performed his eyelid surgery. Russell is bright and lively as ever and is greatly enjoying this morning’s adventure! Updates to come soon.”
The photo at the top of this page is from Russell’s visit to the veterinary college that day.
September 8 Facebook update: “Tucker is a Boston Terrier who suffers from a seizure disorder. Tucker came to our hospital on Thursday night and had to stay for several days. He needed a special medicated infusion to get his seizures under control. We are so thrilled to report that Tucker responded well to his treatment and was successfully weaned off the medication by Sunday. Once Tucker was no longer hooked up to an IV, he was brought into our staff area to hang out with the employees and one very special cat. A certain someone curled up with Tucker and brought him some comfort after his ordeal.”
September 9 Facebook update: “We have very exciting news about Russell! The doctors who performed Russell’s first surgery on his left eye were so happy with how great it looks, they went ahead and performed the same surgery on his right eye as well! Russell now has had a corrective procedure done to each eye to rectify his inverted eyelids. We know he looks a little jarring right now; a special black marker was used to draw on Russell before surgery and the sutures themselves are blue. Russell’s right eye is swollen right now as everything heals. Russell is just as energetic and happy as ever. He loves to play with his toys and likes following staff members around the hospital as they work. He is still extremely talkative and meows at us constantly as we go about business. Happily, this should be Russell’s last surgery concerning his eyes! This is a major hurdle crossed on Russell’s road to recovery.”
Russell’s medical care has been paid for by donations from animal lovers, and he will return to his family once he is fully healed. Russell’s family lost everything in the fire except for their beloved cat, and they are grateful to everyone who has helped.
We see a tender, loving moment between Russell and his petmom during a visit, in a photo below.
