The Humane Society of Missouri, headquartered in St. Louis, quickly found placement for 37 kittens found crammed into a dog crate on the side of the highway Thursday morning.

A taxi driver spotted the crate on the side of the road on I-44 near Webster Groves and saved the babies from the terrible fate they would surely have met before long had they not been rescued. The kittens range in age from two days to four weeks old. Some were sick when found but others appeared to be healthy.

Humane Society of Missouri networked for the babies and secured places for them in a day. They wrote at Facebook Friday evening, saying: “Through a lot of hard work, many phone calls and much networking with some great cat rescue groups and volunteers, HSMO has been able to secure placements for all 37 of the kittens found by the side of the road on May 8. Together we’re all making sure they will have the best chance possible for wonderful lives!”

HMSO is asking the public for information, and wants to know where the kittens came from and who put them into the crate.

KDSK Channel 5 News filed this brief report on the story:

  1. Sooo cute. Wish I could have gotten one. They’d have had a big bro kitty and me as their mama to love them. Glad they all went to homes soon though.
