RSPCA Inspector Jon Knight and the shelter’s cattery supervisor tell more on the inspiring story of tenacious Mama cat Jolie.

First, a brief recap of the story: Inspector Knight responded to call from a resident of March, Cambridgeshire, UK, and picked up a black cat that had been thrown from a moving car a couple of weeks earlier. He took her to a vet where she was examined and determined to have a scrape on her cheek but no other injuries. She had obviously just had kittens; so, after a feeding, and a deworming and flea treatment, inspector Knight took her back where he’d gotten her so she could tend to her babies.

Jolie famously meowed instructions to Mr. Knight and made it clear by her actions that he was to follow her as she led him to her kittens. The determined mama has become a celebrity kitty in recent days as her story has been told. She was named by RSPCA staff as a namesake to noted movie star mama, Angelina Jolie. She and her kittens are being cared for at the RSPCA’s Block fen Animal Centre.

The little family, safe and sound

The Good Samaritan who called the RSPCA to tell them about Jolie had been concerned about her during the two weeks after she’d been dumped. The resident had been watching for the cat and feeding her, and had finally trapped her in a greenhouse, at which point the Samaritan called the RSPCA to come for her.

In telling a bit more on the story, Inspector Knight said, ” I began to follow her and she took me through the rear garden, across a ploughed field and into a farmyard. All the time she was calling me and waiting for me to follow.

She then took me into an old farm machinery barn and led me to behind a stack of old wood and there were her four kittens.

There is absolutely no way I would have found these kittens without this cat’s help. She was a huge distance away from the garden she had first been found in, and was clearly doing all she could to lead me to her kittens.

In my 15 years as an inspector I have never had this happen before and I was quite shocked by it all. Jolie had been through an awful lot, but she showed real maternal instinct and determination, she really is a remarkable cat.”

The kittens were so young they still had their eyes closed when they were rescued through the combined efforts of Jolie and Jon Knight. The will remain in the care of the Centre until they are old enough to be adopted.

Laura Prince, block fen Animal Centre cattery supervisor said of Jolie and her babies, “The kittens, two boys and two girls, are very healthy and fat! So they have been well looked after by Jolie. She is quite thin so we are doing what we can to get some weight on her, although she probably won’t get back to normal until the kittens have been weaned. She is a lovely friendly cat and only very young herself. You can tell how pleased she is to have a nice warm home and lots of food on tap.”

We’re sure that, as with any cat who gains fame, there will be no shortage of potential adopters for Jolie and her kittens.
