Highland Park, IL realtor Shephanie Hofman and her client Debbie Hahamy were horrified at the sight of six skinny and wary cats and kittens they encountered on a house showing in Glencoe last month. The group the women encountered on August 8 consisted of two adult females and four kittens. The animals’ food bowls were empty and their litter boxes were full; they had been abandoned when the homeowner moved out.
Stephanie called the police, and she and Debbie decided to do something to help the cats. They brought in food and cleaned the litterboxes. Since Stephanie had access to the house key she returned to care for the cats, then later removed them from the property. The women worked with Glencoe Animal Control Officer Katie Sweeney, who credits them with saving the cats lives. Officer Sweeney sent the absentee owner Mark D. Norris a notice of violation. He escaped getting a citation because the cats were no longer being neglected thanks to the efforts of the women feeding them. Mr Norris was told to find homes for the cats. He didn’t take action, so Stephanie Hofman did. Stephanie learned that cats didn’t even have names.
Stephanie’s friend Karen Long took two of the kittens. Stephanie and Karen are shown here with Karen’s kittens, Pixie and Smokie. Karen is at left and Stephanie is at right in the photos. All six of the animals have found good homes.
