Popeye is a protected permanent resident, a mascot, and an officially designated nursing assistant at the Humane Society of Indianapolis, Indiana.

He was brought in to the shelter with a damaged eye that staff vets had to remove at the shelter’s medical clinic. He was adopted as a permanent resident, and was promoted to staff when demonstrating his dedication and a special talent for providing comfort to kitties recovering from surgery.

IndyHumane says of Popeye:

“Popeye is quite special around here – he was “adopted” by our staff and has a very special gift. We discovered he has a natural talent at soothing our animals recovering from surgery!

“Popeye is FIV+ and lives in IndyHumane’s surgery suite. He is the “surgery assistant” and his collar tag confirms the authority level. Job duties primarily include sleeping on the heating pads to make sure they are warm and taste-testing all cat food to make sure it is …well…food.”

Popeyed is profiled in this short feature.

Popeye also allows shelter staff to dress him up at holidays.
