By thinking adoption first, Petco aims to help find homes for thousands of pets in need every month. Another adoption event is scheduled for July 14-15.
As Jonathan Swift once said, “Every dog must have his day,” and Petco customers have truly brought this famous quote to life, and then some, since they helped save the lives of 5,120 dogs, cats and small animals during Petco’s June National Adoption Weekend. Although adopting helps save thousands of pet’s lives every month, it’s also important to properly care for a newly adopted pet by making sure they are spayed or neutered. Every year in the United States, 3 – 4 million homeless dogs and cats are needlessly put to death because of overpopulation in shelters – that is one death about every 8 seconds.
To help rally around this cause, Petco and Unleashed by Petco stores nationwide will host pet adoption events the weekend of July 14-15, 2012 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and hopes to raise awareness for shelter pets in need of loving homes in addition to urging new pet parents to spay or neuter their new pet. Spaying and neutering not only reduces the number of dogs and cats killed, it helps animals to live longer and healthier lives by eliminating or reducing many of the health and behavior issues that result in so many animals being relinquished to shelters.
Advantage II® and K9 Advantix II® will be sponsoring the weekend by offering adopting pet parents a free flea prevention starter kit to keep pets protected this summer. The events will provide animal lovers across the nation the chance to meet many adoptable animals, learn about their local animal adoption groups and personally experience Petco’s Think Adoption First program. Petco works with and supports approximately 7,500 local animal welfare groups across the country to help find homes for more than 250,000 adoptable animals every year.
