Surfing isn’t an activity that your average cat would enjoy, but then again, Kuli is no average cat. He weighed just one pound when he was adopted, and at four months old one of his eyes had to be surgically removed.

It was that surgery that may have prompted Kuli’s love of surfing – he was given frequent baths after his surgery, developing a water tolerance that most cats lack. When he was six months old, Kuli learned to surf.

Kuli’s owners, Alexandra Gomez and Krista Littleton, live in Hawaii where surfing is a popular pastime. They thought that Kuli might be able to enjoy the sport with them, and took him out on a longboard. Soon the pair switched Kuli to a boogie board, since Kuli could easily hold onto the surface with his paws.

Gomez explained to ABC News, “His first time in the water, we just let him float on the board by himself near the shoreline and I would paddle around with him.” Gomez also notes that Kuli always wore a life jacket while he was still learning to swim confidently. He still wears it sometimes, depending on the weather and the conditions.

There’s one thing for sure – Kuli may be one of the only cats in the world to enjoy heading out on a surfboard.
