Lady J, after emergency surgery to remove her eyes

.

Two kittens in need were rescued and are getting help to go on to better lives.

Los Angeles, California rescue group Kitten Rescue pulled Odin and Lady J from an area shelter and got them much needed medical care for serious eye infections. Lady J was in shockingly poor shape, with one eye so bad it was massively swollen and protruded outward from her face. Although the operation was costly, Kitten Rescue followed the eye specialist’s recommendation and had her eyes removed. She is making a great recovery and is now happily playing with Odin and enjoying life in foster care.

Kitten Rescue told Odin and Lady J’s story at Facebook Thursday, writing:

“One of our volunteers received a call about two kittens at East Valley Shelter who were in dire need of rescue and emergency medical care. As soon as she saw the pictures she rushed to the shelter to save them and took them straight to VCA West LA, where she saw an eye specialist. He told her that the Siamese boy (Odin) will be blind in one eye and the little black girl (Justita- “Lady J”) was already blind and her eyes were so infected that she needed emergency surgery. They operated immediately, removing both eyes. Lady J has recovered very well from surgery. They are both on antibiotics to kill the infection that caused this horrible condition.

“Lady J has set up a fundraiser to help pay for her medical bills. Her emergency surgery was $2100.00. She is pretty sure that there will be follow up care and wants to raise a little extra to pay for Odin’s treatment and both of their medication.”

Here is Lady J’s fundraising page: Lady J The Blind Cat’s Crowdrise Fundraiser.  Kitten Rescue is gratefully accepting contribtions to help with Lady J’s eye removal surgery and the kittens’ other medical bills.

The fundraising page’s message is written in Lady J’s ‘voice’, and says:

“I was really, really sick (like with my eyes literally popping out of my head) when Kitten Rescue saved me from East Valley Shelter. They took me straight to an eye specialist and I had to have my eyes removed. I know that sounds really extreme, but I could not see anyway and now I have no more pain. I can play and find the litter box just fine. I guess I have been blind as long as I can remember, so it is all that I know. Anyway, I heard that my vet bills were really high so I thought that I would try to help Kitten Rescue out by trying to raise some funds for my surgery. They are really nice people and they seem to help out a lot of special needs cats like me, so we should all pitch in a little to help them pay their vet bills (believe it or not, vets do not do this stuff for free!) I really appreciate it!”

If you wish to see the disturbingly graphic photo of Lady J with her hugely swollen eye, taken at the vet’s office before surgery, click HERE. Suffice to say, the photo clearly demonstrates the need for her to have her eyes removed.

In response to a Facebook commenter deploring that the shelter did not get the kittens help, Kitten Rescue responded: “The city shelters are overwhelmed with cats and kittens, the medical expenses simply outweight the rescources and space to hold animals so unfortunately many sick and injured animals are left untreated. The New Hope Coordinator did her job in getting them to a rescue since the shelter would not have been able to aid them. The kittens came into the shelter in this condition.”

Note: Odin and Lady J were saved by Santito‘s petmom Eden, a true friend to the kitties who is also fostering the pair.
