A sweet senior Hurricane Katrina survivor is doing volunteer work as a nanny dog for shelter kittens, helping the babies to become comfortable around dogs.
12 year old Boots has plenty of prior experience with kitten, and the calm and laid-back canine started his volunteers duties at the Arizona Humane Society‘s kitten room a few weeks ago, hanging out with the 5 to 8 week old kittens on his Wednesday visits to the shelter, where he is accompanied by shelter staff and other volunteers.
“It is such a win-win for everyone involved,” said AHS public relations manager Bretta Nelson. “Boots loves it. Most of the kittens love it. Some are very scared at first, but the whole thought is to get them acclimated to being around dogs.”
“He’s so relaxed,” Nelson said. “We bring him in, he sniffs the tents, he sniffs [the kittens]. You can see their reaction, who’s curious and will just come up to Boots or will want to go slow.”
“By bringing a dog nanny in, we’re exposing these kittens to a lot of different things,” Nelson said. “In the end, they will be adaptable and more adoptable.”
Susan J. wrote at the Facebook page for EVB Live, saying: “Hello AZ Humane Friends and Family. I’m the mother of “Boots” and what a day he has had!! For years he has been doing this in our home but today was his kitten nursery day. He is wore out esp after the after work bath. He says take care and thank you for all you do for animals in your way. P.S. he is a hurricane Katrina survivor as if he wasn’t cool enough.”
