A New Jersey woman has been reunited with her beloved cat three months after a devastating fire destroyed her home.
Christina Summitt is an animal lover who was living with her two dogs and two cats when a fire destroyed her home in Harmony Township earlier this year. Both dogs and one of the cats died in the fire but there was no trace of Captain, the second cat.
Christina has been depressed and sad since losing her home and beloved pets in March, but has made daily trips to her burned out former home, calling for Captain and peeking into the boarded up building.
“I needed to know where he was,” Christina told WFMZ Channel 69 News. “I didn’t want to find him dead, but then at least I could give him his respectful burial that my other three pets got.”
Over the three months of fruitless daily visits to the property, the bereaved petmom held on to her hopes that Captain had survived.
“I just knew Captain was alive,” she said.
Finally, the week before last, someone told Christine they’d seen an orange cat.
“They said there’s an orange cat here,” she told Channel 69. “I know you’re looking, I don’t know if it is yours.”
Christine set a trap and had her beloved cat back six hours later.
“As soon as I saw him, I knew it was him. I looked at him and said Cappy and he looked up, ‘meow’.”
Captain was injured in the fire but managed to survive.
A chip scan at the vet confirmed that the cat was definitely Captain. One of Captain’s ears is burnt and the other is gone, his paws and nails are damaged and he is greatly underweight.
Christine is grateful to have Captain back with her again.
“It’s my one miracle,” she said. “I don’t know if you get more than one, I’m not being greedy, I don’t need anymore. I’m beyond grateful to God for this miracle.”
