Miss Pickford’s Unbelievable Journey

A very lucky stowaway cat found herself at the shelter and looking for a home last month after traveling all the way from Cyprus to the UK in a storage container, and miraculously surviving the three week journey to Felixstowe port without any food.

The stowaway kitty got into the shipping container at the port of Limassol, Cyprus, in February, and journeyed via ship to the UK on a trip that included stops in Haifa, Israel, Antwerp, Belgium, Bremerhaven, Germany and Rotterdam, the Netherlands along the way.

Miss Pickford, a four year old tabby-and-white cat named because she was found in a Pickfords Removals container when it arrived in Bedfordshire, was safe and sound at Cats Protection’s Birmingham Adoption Centre after she was found in the container, and it’s believed she survived by licking the condensation from the walls of the container.

After being discovered in the container, she enjoyed a short stay at Bayton Lodge Quarantine Kennels and Cattery, paid for by Pickfords, and Bayton Lodge owners Lorraine and Dale Grove, who were surprised that she’d managed to survive her difficult voyage.

“When she arrived with us she was in a very bad condition,” says Lorraine, “She was extremely thin, very dehydrated and her fur was dry like straw.” Luckily Miss Pickford made a full recovery during her quarantine period, and was given flea and worm treatment, rabies vaccination and a microhip.

After her adventurous journey, Miss Pickford was feeling shy and a little unsure of herself, but the volunteers and staff at the Birmingham Adoption Centre were confident that she would be the perfect pet for someone able to offer her the right home.

“Miss Pickford is a very special cat to have survived such a grueling ordeal,” sayid Sarah Whitmore, Deputy Manager at Cats Protection’s Birmingham Adoption Centre. “She’s fairly shy and retiring, so we’re hoping to find her a quiet home in the Birmingham area with an experienced owner who can coax her out of her shell.”

Miss Pickford’s story was shared by news outlets and she found herself a new home and a new life.
