Maryland Firefighters Dismantle HVAC to Save Orphaned Kitten

The young kitten in this bittersweet rescue was trapped for days until firefighters came to the rescue. Sadly, he was found with his deceased mother; but the good news is that his young life was saved and he will now find a home with one of his rescuers.

Area residents called  Bowie MD officers on Saturday after hearing a kitten crying for days from inside of a discarded heating and air conditioning unit left in the backyard of a home. At around 2pm that day Bowie Animal Control officers called firefighters to the scene.

The weeks old  kitten is said to have been there for days either unable or unwilling to come out. He is thought to have either been taken in to the unit by his mother or wandered in on his own, with her following. His cries had become so loud on Saturday that concerned community members contacted Animal Control for help.

Firefighter/medics from the Pointer Ridge Fire/EMS Station #843 and Steve Stearns, a representative of the county citizen services unit responded to the scene when called in by Animal Control, and made the rescue.  Though they did not hear any meowing when they first investigated, they decided to dismantle the HVAC .  Inside they found the deceased female cat and the weeks old kitten.

One of the firefighters  has asked to adopt the orphaned kitten after animal control sees to his medical care. The firefighter says she will name him after a newborn child that she delivered Sunday morning.
