A mama cat and her kittens are safe now after being found taped into a box on a hot day.

Ken Lyons, a volunteer with Ten Lives Club cat rescue in Balisdell, NY, discovered the little cat family when he spotted a box on top of donation bins outside the shelter at around 3 pm Monday afternoon. Ken at first thought the duct taped Home Depot box contained donations, since there was no note or other indication that there were living creatures inside. Fortunately, he found mama and her babies in time, before the incident turned truly tragic had they remained trapped in the airless box in the heat.

Mama and her five kittens are doing well. The kittens are about 7 – 10 days old.

Ten Lives Club shared the news at Facebook, adding: “This is not right at all – what is a matter with people leaving life things – cats, dogs, children in hot areas during such heat wrenching weather!!!!”

Two area TV stations sent news crews to cover the story and share the shelter’s appeal for donations to help offset costs for the kittens’ care.

The kittens, along with their mama, will be fostered until they are ready for adoption.

WIVB Channel 4 visited the shelter for their report on the story.
