The tiny kitten escaped from a box just as  the bulldozer approached a pile of trash at the Elkhart, IN landfill on Tuesday. He is safe and well cared for now at the Humane Society of Elkhart County.

The grey kitten climbed through the box he was in, just in time to escape being bulldozed into the trash pile. He ran off but was easily caught; then an animal control officer brought him to the shelter.

Assistant Director at the humane society, Rachel Dennis, said, “It’s always very heartbreaking. It’s sad. It’s tragic. This is why we’re here though.”

The kitten, called Hefty in the ABC 57 news report,  is about 8 weeks old. He is being treated for a URI and is expected to be made available for adoption in a couple of weeks.
