It was Giana’s lucky day on Sunday, when the tiny 6 week old kitten with a respiratory infection was rescued and ended up with people who will get her better and find her a good home.

Giana owes her lucky break to a concerned passerby, the Tucson Fire Department and the Humane Society of Southern Arizona.

When he passerby heard Giana meowing from a drainage ditch on Sunday he quickly alerted TFD crews. Firefighters were fast-acting and Giana was rescued from the drainage ditch. She is now cozy, comfy and recuperating at the HSSA.

Firefighters followed the kitten’s faint meows and located her in a underground ditch near East Grant Road and North Tucson Boulevard in the city, where she is thought to have been wedged for quite some time. Firefighters lowered a ladder into a crawl space and one of the crew members went down and carried her back up above ground to safety.

TFD turned the Giana over to HSSA, where she is being treated for malnutrition and an upper respiratory infection. She will stay in foster care for several weeks before being made available for adoption into a good home.

Her rescuers were all smiles as they posed with a photo of Giana on Monday.

“Pets are an important part of every family and we will do everything in our power to ensure the well-being and safety of our community’s pets,” TFD Capt. Barrett Baker said

Raw video from the scene captures the successful conclusion of the rescue effort, and the moment that the kitten is brought back above ground:
