A kitten is in a much better way now after being rescued from a pile of garbage just before a truckload of food waste was sent to an incinerator.

Trash men in Stockholm, Sweden heard meows coming from the huge and slimy pile of garbage and the men spent a half hour digging through filth before finally locating the kitten, who was coated in gunk and looking much the worse for wear.

The rescuers got permission to empty the truck full of waste and dug through a stinking combination of bags and loose food to get to the kitten, who was buried underneath the pile.

The kitty has been named Melker.

Melker is thought to have fallen in to the garbage truck while foraging for food.

Bekir Mercil and two co-workers are the heroes who got into the filth to save the kitten, who looked remarkbly better after getting a much-needed bath.

Bekir spoke with The Local Sweden for a story, saying: ‘It [the kitten] would have headed for the incinerator, and you can just imagine what would have happened.

‘We had a shovel to remove the waste as carefully as we could without doing any harm, and a broom to try to get the kitten out.’

‘When it was free, it just spurted out of the truck, totally covered in grease. It trembled like a leaf, it was so scared and tired.’

Kitty was taken to a local shelter and is said to be recovering nicely.

  1. Thank you for saving this precious baby. I would not want to think about what would have happened otherwise if not for these quick thinking men. Thank you so much!!!!
