Kitten Rescue Los Angeles came to the aid of a kitten seriously injured after an accidental incident with  car’s fan belt.

Dinky was a stray kitten in South Los Angeles, desperate to escape the madness of the July 4th fireworks, when she crawled into the cool, quiet shelter of a car engine. But Dinky misunderstood the nature of her haven. The next morning someone started the car and Dinky got caught in the fan belt. She suffered catastrophic injuries: one rear foot had been amputated and the other rear leg was badly fractured, sustaining major tissue damage. The driver was absolutely horrified. The incident had broken her fan belt, so she was unable to drive Dinky to a vet, but she knew exactly who call: Kitten Rescue volunteer, Esther Alapy.

Esther rushed over, picked up Dinky and drove her to ASEC, a critical care and surgical specialty veterinary hospital. The vet performed emergency surgery on both legs and stitched up the lacerations on her face. He amputated the rest of Dinky’s left rear leg. The right rear leg needed complicated surgery, that included inserting a plate to set her leg. She spent two days in the hospital on an IV drip, antibiotics and pain meds.

A YouCaring fundraising page collected nearly $500 over its $4,000 goal to pay for her medical care.

Dinky went into foster care with foster mom Deana Hendrickson, where she was rehabilitated. She has made an amazing recovery and is leading a happy life as a tripod!

She has recently had the fixator removed from her injured leg and she continues to recuperate on cage rest.

We were sent a photo of Dinky at the vet after her rescue, which clearly shows her severed leg ending in a stump, but decided not to share it here.

Dinky won first prize in a photo contest, so she will be seen as the cover kitty for Kitten Rescue’s 2016 calendar, in the photo at top of this post.

Kitten Rescue is asking those interested in giving Dinky a good home to contact them at [email protected] to inquire about adopting her.

Dinky’s foster caregiver Deana posted the video seen below to Facebook, writing:

“Somebody had the fixator removed from her back leg yesterday, and she likes it. Not sore at all! Although she’s still on cage rest, I let Dinky out for a minute to demonstrate her mad play skills. She’s not afraid of my dogs, either. See, Dinky can do more than just eat!”
