The clock was ticking, and Therese Miata didn’t have much time to get from New York to Orlando to adopt Ricky the kitten, who was days away from being euthanized.
Miata saw an Instagram picture online of Ricky, a little black kitten scheduled to be put down at the Orange County Animal Shelter, and fell in love, according to a report by WFTV Channel 9. She decided that she and her husband, Thomas Sakalis, weren’t going to let that happen. The one-month-old kitten had been at OCAS since Oct. 29 and ended up left behind after his sibling was adopted.
The couple quickly bought tickets to fly to Orlando.
“I had only two hours sleep and Thomas was straight from work on no sleep,” Miata wrote on an Instagram post of her and Thomas holding Ricky. Once there, they discovered Ricky had an upper respiratory infection, and flying back was out of the question. So they drove. “Our one-day rescue mission became a weekend adoption road trip,” but one with a very happy ending.
There are many more adorable kittens like Kennedy and Marshmellow, below, in need of a home and pictured on the Orange County Animal Services Facebook.
I have always had a black kitty in my mix. Love them. Thanks for giving him a home.
