A Colorado town is replacing its top cat with a top dog.
As Walter the 3 legged cat’s two year term as mayor of the rural town of Divide, Colorado drew to a close in recent weeks 11 candidates vied for the position. All 11 candidates were animals, including cats, dogs, a donkey, a horse, a wolf and a hedgehog.
The election is run biennially to benefit the TCRAS (Teller County regional Animal Shelter), a nonprofit, no-kill shelter serving the animal population of the county. Each vote costs a dollar, and all monies go to support the shelter.
By the time the votes were counted earlier this week, about $12,000 had been raised and bloodhound dog Pa Kettle was Divide’s new mayor.
