Cat lovers, now is the time to head to the Catskills – this community is currently decorated with 50 giant cat statues. The statues, painted by local artists, are part of the tenth year of “Cat’n Around Catskill.”
Cat’n Around Catskill is an art celebration which helps to bring people to the community. People travel to see the cat statues, as well as to visit with local businesses. The statues were put on display on Memorial Day Weekend, and they will stay up until Labor Day.
When the statues are taken down, they’ll be prepared for the annual Cat’s Meow Auction & Gala on September 17th. There, 49 of the statues will be auctioned off. The last remaining statue, “Callie the Calico” by artist Theresa Rowe-Obert, will be raffled off. Part of proceeds from the event will be donated to a local non-profit, as well as to the Barry Hopkins Art Scholarship Fund. Artists also receive some of the proceeds from their sculptures’ sales in return for their hard work.
