They say cats have nine lives. For Maggie, that seems to be very true – she’s already used up two of her lives.
Charles Merrell adopted Maggie about ten years ago. When Maggie wasn’t even a year old, she survived Hurricane Katrina.
But that wasn’t the last disaster that Maggie would be threatened with. While Merrell and his girlfriend were on vacation this June, their house caught fire. Neighbors called Merrell to let him know that his house was on fire, and Merrell’s girlfriend called their friend, Sherri Smitty. Smitty immediately went to Merrell’s house to check on the six cats, but by the time she got there, Maggie was already outside.
Four of Merrell’s cats died. His cat, Jim, survived without injury. Quick-thinking neighbors and paramedics had been administering mouth-to-mouth to Maggie on the front lawn. Firefighters were able to provide an oxygen mask, and Maggie was revived. However, she’s needed ongoing veterinary treatment, but is now eating on her own.
Merrell, Jim, and Maggie have been displaced because of the fire, but Merrell hopes that they’ll be able to return to the home within a year. If you would like to help Merrell out with the costs of Maggie’s veterinary treatment, please visit this fundraising page.
