Just when it seemed like there could be no more survivors of the earthquake which hit Amatrice, Italy on August 24th, another cat has been discovered in the rubble – alive. While firefighters were trying to recover personal property from a home that had collapsed during the earthquake, they heard a faint meowing coming from the rubble.

Firefighters uncovered Pietro, a cat who was trapped in the rubble. At first, firefighters could only free his head, but the cat looked around as they worked to free the rest of his body.

Pietro was dehydrated and had a fractured jaw, and was promptly taken to the vet. He may have been drinking rainwater to stay alive.

Pietro is one of a number of pets who were rescued from the rubble, including another cat and a Golden Retriever.
