Three years ago, Tommy the rescue cat got lost during a fire at the shelter where he was living. Today, he’s back home at the shelter – all because of a microchip.

The shelter, located in Anamosa, Iowa, suffered a fire in 2013. Eleven cats escaped, and while most of them returned, Tommy did not. Animal Welfare Foundation manager Tracy McCarty set traps for weeks after the fire in hopes that Tommy was still in the area, but he was never found.

Until now. Tommy turned up 25 miles away in Cedar Rapids. He was picked up by animal control, and his microchip contained McCarty’s information. Animal control contacted McCarty, and Tommy is now safely home. He will serve as the shelter’s mascot.

This incredible story is an important reminder about the value of microchipping your cats. If you haven’t already done so, be sure to get your cat microchipped.
