Flames tore through a triple-decker multi-family home on Laban Street in Providence, Rhode Island on the morning of Friday May 9, and luckily all of the residents were able to escape to safety, including a mama cat giving birth at the time of the fire.
Resident Ruthann Santiago exited the burning building to call the fire department, then went back into retrieve the cat. When she went looking for the cat, Ruthann discovered that the pregnant feline had delivered some of her kittens.
Mama kitty delivered the rest of her babies – totaling 8 – outside in the back of a car. All were reported to be doing well.
Firefighters arrived to find flames coming from the first floor, and the fire quickly spread to the entire building. The 11 residents were helped with housing and basic needs by the Red Cross.
