The little cat was swimming for dear life in the middle of a freezing cold Arizona lake when she was saved by a trio of rescuers.
Denise Vlahos took charge of the terrified cat after she was plucked from the frigid waters of Lake Pleasant in Peoria, Arizona by two people on waverunners, according to Arizona’s News 12. Vlahos described the incident as “by far the craziest and saddest thing” she’s ever seen.
Vlahos told PEOPLE she was relaxing on her boyfriend’s pontoon boat with friends when someone on a waverunner got her attention. “The woman said my husband is allergic and they cannot keep it. I immediately said, ‘Give it to me, I will take it!’ She was curled up in a ball in the foot part of the waverunner soaking wet, dripping and shivering. The water was quite cold for us, let alone a tiny animal.”
Vlahos wrapped the cat in a beach towel to keep her “as warm as I could.” She took the cat home with her and put the frightened kitty in a spare room where “she crawled straight under the bed,” she told PEOPLE.
“The cat owners have not come forward yet, but I hope that they do after getting her story out there in the public,” she told PEOPLE in an email. “It is most definitely a miracle she’s survived.”
She thinks the cat may have fallen off of a houseboat. Vlahos says she feels that it’s her duty to keep the cat safe and try to find her family. “She is just so traumatized still,” she said.
I am sure she appreciates all your kindness.
