There’s a new president of the Southampton University Students’ Union, but it’s not who you might imagine. Susu the cat, who has been a part of the students’ union since 2002, was voted in as honorary president by 176 votes to 86.

Susu was originally a stray, and was too scared to even enter the students’ union building. However, students fed Susu scraps of food and eventually the cat became a fixture around the building. While still highly independent, Susu is “much adored,” according to Ben Franklin, the students’ union president.

Susu helps students to alleviate their stress, and her election as honorary president reflects the contributions she’s made to the Southampton University Students’ Union. The students’ union is preparing to launch its new brand shortly, and Susu will be identified as honorary president. You can learn more about Susu through this blog post about the cat and her special nomination.
